Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim means “In the Name of Allah the Compassionate and the Merciful”. We start our prayers with his name and in the beginning of every part of the prayer we start the same way. Every ayaat begins with Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim.
Let us examine the significance of this. Why we do this, what it means and the significance of reciting it. Allah is present everywhere. He is within you and all around you. He is Omnipresent.
So what happens when you start anything or everything with his name. Allah says in the Quran that “when you are praying to me instantly I am praying for you”. This means he is right with you. Both you and Allah are praying together.
Our Pirs who were appointed by the Imams of the time studied the Quran in its original language which is Arabic. When they came to India they saw that the murids who were converted to Islam and Ismailism had no knowledge of the Arabic language. So they studied our languages and in the form of the Ginans they explained us the Gist of the Quran so we could understand the message of Allah as explained in the Quran.
There are many ginans which are explaining different parts of the Quranic ayaats. In relation to Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim, Pir Shamash explains its significance in the GRANTH “Satveni nani” (GRANTH means very long ginans). The following is the quadrant from the Granth:
Bismillah ka Bhed jo nyara,
Tis mahe chupiya pragat kiltara,
Surijan te mahe aisa jano,
Chana nahi so pragat mano.
Essentially what Pir Shamash is explaining us in this paragraph is that Allah is existing at all times hidden within you but when you take his name by reciting Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim He is Alive and Present within you.
Imagine you have made a phone call to Allah and He answers you. You are now in conversation with him. Whatever is your reason he is present to bless you for your success in the activities.
We start our prayers with his name. We also take his name before we start eating our meals, and whenever we start any number of activities through our day throughout our life. This way whatever activities you are engaged in He is present to support you in it and bring you success. Only you have to believe that it is happening this way. Faith is what makes it happen.
To talk about his compassion and mercy we have innumerable things happening all around us. He is provider and sustainer to every living being. Look at a tiny ant to the giant elephant and everything in between are provided their sustenance. He shows mercy by keeping everything like sun, moon, water, earth, and sky etc. in proper order and make the life of every being easy to manage through his MERCY.
So think of Allah by your side whenever you remember him by saying
“Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim”
Amiji
