Ginan – Uth jaag mun mera
This ginan is composed by Imam Begum. She was from the family of Pir Hasan Kabirdin. She used to live at the time of Imam Hasan Ali Shah (Aga Khan the First). This ginan has eight verses which basically are advises and knowledge of life.
I will write about two verses from this ginan. The first verse goes this way “Eji Paatris ane Pachvis, sol ane aath – Vara choriasi fariyo nune shan na aavi re”
In this verse Imam Begum explains us about 84 times humans are given chance to achieve SALVATION which means once the soul leaves human body it does not take another body and lives in the world of souls. Paatris means 35, Pachvis means 25, Sol means 16 and Aath means 8. If you add them up it comes to 84.
Now our souls are living for hundreds of thousands of years. They are taking bodies after bodies from plant life to animal life to human life. I have written about Char juugs in which these souls have been travelling. This is the final juug which is Kul Juug. In our ginan there is a mention that you as human being get 8 chances in Kul Juug to attain SALVATION.
In Sut or Karta Juug humans were given 35 chances to attain salvation. In Treta juug 25 chances, in Dwapur juug we were given 16 chances and in present Kal juug we have been given 8 chances. This brings us to 84 chances to attain salvation.
In the second part of this verse the pir says that you have been given 84 chances to attain salvation, still your conscience has not alerted you. God is very kind and has given us so many chances to attain salvation. In this existence we do not know if our arrival is for the first time or the eight time. So the advice is to smarten up and work towards your salvation.
The second verse that I will write about is:
“Ekvis hajaar chasso dum din me ghat ta hai, aath pohar me varnjara tu kya kamata hai”.
Imam Begum says to us that we are losing 21,600 breadths every day. Later she asks, what are you earning in this time period. She refers you like varnjara which means businessman. Major part of your existence in this life is to do spiritual business for salvation.
The day which is 24 hours is divided into 8 sections which is called aath pohar. 24 hours are divided by 8 comes to 3 hours per pohar. This earning is related to your spiritual earning and not your work or business earning.
In our old dua we used to say “aath pohar chosath gadi”. One pohar again is divided by 8 which makes a day consists of 64 gadi. So one day is broken down into 64 parts. This makes one gadi of 22.5 minutes. I am writing about this because in other ginans these words are used which will give you better understanding of the ginan.
One example of this is in a line in the ginan "Khat gadi tou pachli jaago, cheto mere bhai" . Here Khat means 6 gadi and pachli means the last part of the night before dawn. Now this was said in the Indian sub-continent where the day break or dawn is always at about 6 a.m. Hence if you take 6 gadi times 22.5 minutes gives you 2 hours and 15 minutes i.e. from 3.45 am to 6 am is the best time to remember Allah.
One more thing I want to add here is that scientists today are saying that a person loses 2000 breadths every day. Imam Begum about over 150 years ago said we lose 21,600 breadths. She gave this number by her spiritual knowledge and ability. The numbers are close and may be in present situation there are changes in breathing.
