Chogadia
The word Chogadia comes from a word Gadi. A gadi is a span of time. Each gadi is 22.5 minutes. In our old dua we used to say “ath pahor chosath gadi” which is equal to a day, means 24 hours. Each day is divided into 8 pahor which is 3 hours each and further every pahor is divided into 8 gadi which is 22.5 minutes.
Now in ancient times in India there were many small kingdoms and each of them was ruled by a king. Every 4 gadi (which is Chogadia) a large drum would be played and some kind of announcement was made on behalf of the king by the town cryer or Muneri as mentioned in our Chogadias.
Chogadias are composed like ginans by pir Sadardin. These are to be sung 4 gadi before sunrise and 4 gadi after sunset. There are 5 chogadias written for the evening time and 24 for the early mornings.
The following is one verse of evening chogadia:
Juug me feere shahji muneri
Shaha pir gatiye ghar vadhayu
Ghadh Aalmut shah dekhadio
Ham bhai nito nit sohagi
Allah aayo thiyo gatiye bhaag
Bhai pachame Alisha bhale aayo ji.
In this verse Pir Sadardin says that Pirs and Dais are going around the world announcing the presence of the Imam of the time and congratulating the murids. He also says that the Imam is in Aalmut which is the fortress area in Iran where he lives and is ruling the land. (Imams ruled in Iran for about 171 years). He says that we the jamat are fortunate to know his presence in the west. (Iran is located on the west of India where Pir Sadardin was living).
Chogadias are written in Kutchi or Sindhi language. They both sound similar, just like Hindi and Urdu.
In the past chogadias were regularly sung on Thursday evenings which according to the Muslim calendar the beginning of Friday. In Muslim calendar the day begins at six o’clock in the evening. Hence Friday has started after six p.m. as per the calendar we follow today. In Islam Friday is considered a holy day. According to Prophet Mohamed when the SUN first appeared it was Friday.
As Ismaili we perform daily prayers every morning and evening. Every week we celebrate on Friday and partake niyaz in the evening. Every month we celebrate Chandraat (which is New moon day) and perform additional special prayers. Every year we celebrate the yearly special prayers on Navroz. So our prayers are continuous around the world where we live. Prayers bring peace and tranquility around, among other spiritual benefits.
So this is Chogadia in short. I hope you got some additional knowledge about our ginans and granths.
