PIR SADARDIN
Pir Sadardin (the original name Pir Sadrudin) was born in a town called Sabzwar in Iran. He was the son of Pir Shahbuddin. Our 30th Imam Shah Islam shah appointed him as the Pir and gave him the mandate to spread Ismailism in India.
Pir Sadardin came to India and studied in detail the teachings of Hindu religion and connected the deep philosophies of Hindu religion to Islam and started propogating the Ismaili Tarikah. He preached in Sind, Punjab, Kutch, Kathiawar and Gujerat and explained the Imamat and gave the recognition of the Imam of the time.
According to the belief of Hindus of Das Avtaar (the ten incarnations of God) that God has already taken 9 avtaars and are waiting for the tenth avtaar. Pir Sadardin explained them that the tenth avtaar is already here which has started from the time of Hazrat Ali. (Read Das Avtaar article for details). He proved to the Hindu people through their Ved and Puran (Hindu religion’s holy books) that Nabi Mohamed and Islam is the current religion which is connected to the Hindu religion. This way he converted the tribes called Lohana, Bhatia etc. and showed them the Sat Panth (true path). He explained them Islam, Ismaili tarikah, and converted them to Ismiali Muslims.
The converted people were very poor and at the lower end of the status in the population. Hence Pir Sadardin gave them the name Kwaja which meant respectable, businessman etc. and thus enhanced their status in the community. Later the name kwaja through usage turned into Khoja and hence the community is known as Khoja Muslims.
One of the duties of the Pirs was to deliver Maale Wajabat (Dasond) that was collected, to the Imam. Pir Sadardin went to see the Imam when he was preaching in Sind. This was the first travel to see the Imam. The mode of travel was on horses or on foot through the rough terrains and high mountains. Pir Sadardin met Imam in the town of Isfahan. He did his didar and performed dastboshi. This visit back and forth to the Imam took 1 year and 5 months.
Then Imam Islamshah inquired the condition of the Indian Ismaili Jamat and sent the pir back to India. Pir Sadardin went back to India and continued his preaching with more enthusiasm. Imam gave him the instructions to build Jamat Khanas, appoint Mukhi – Kamadia etc.
Pir Sadardin built the first Jamat Khana in a town called Kotda Sanghani. This Jamat Khana is still existing. He appointed Mukhis in Sind, Punjab, Kashmir etc. and the preaching continues.
Since Pir Sadardin was preaching in India where the Hindu religion was predominant, he was invited to debate with the Hindu high priests. He debated with them the religions in the court of the king and won the debate. There he got the title of Sohdev. This means he had knowledge of 100 high priests.
He was also known as Baar gur (means he helped to 12 karod or 120 million people to attain SALVATION). Another name he was known as was Harichandra (means the moon of God).
Pir Sadardin has written many ginans and granths which we still recite in our Jamat Khanas. These ginans give us the true understanding of creation, our life, the knowledge of the Imams and all of the good habits one can adopt to achieve SALVATION. If you follow his ginans it will keep you on the Straight Path. He made his living by writing the Quran and selling the manuscript. He paid the Dasond and supported himself and his family. He had 5 son of which one was Pir Hasan Kabirdin who got the Piratan after Pir Sadardin.
Pir Sadardin died at the age of 119 years in the town of Ucch Sharif in Punjab. He has left a great legacy for the followers of Ismaili tariqah.
