Pir Shamsh
Before you read the life of Pir Shamsh read the article on Prophets and Pirs. That will give you the idea of the status of the Pirs and the Imams.
Our 29th Imam “Shah Kasamshah” appointed Pir Shamsh as the Pir and sent him to propogate the Ismaili tarikah of Islam in other parts in the east. His actual name was Pir Shamsudin Mohamed. He was the second major pir who came to India after pir Satgur Noor.
Pir Shamsh was born in Sabzwar (Iran) and he was a son of Pir Salahudin. He went to Badakshan and started spreading Ismailism. He gave them the understanding of the Imam of the time and on the Amr or order of the Imam Kasamshah he gave bayyat to the people and made them Ismaili.
After Badakshan he travelled to Ghazni, China and passed through Pamir mountains and arrived in the state of Kashmir in India. It is said that he travelled 24 countries. In India he studied many Indian languages thoroughly and started spreading the knowledge of the Imam of the time and of Ismailism.
Once he arrived in the town of Anaal where all Hindu people were rejoicing the time of Dashera. This is the festival when they get together and sing and dance 10 nights in a row. Pir Shamsh joined the group and started singing Garbi which was composed by himself. He explained in these Garbi all about Ismailism and Imam of the time etc. The Hindu padits started to write down the Garbi and it affected them so much that the pandits and other Hindus accepted Islam and took his bayat and became Ismaili.
Pir Shamsh had performed many miracles in different parts of India and the population that was around those area became Ismaili in large number. He converted hundreds of thousands to Ismailism.
The people who were converted from Hinduism accepted Ismailism but due to the fear of other Hindus they practiced the religion in secret. These people were called Gupti. Later on during the time of Pir Sadardin they were told to follow Ismailism openly. They were called Khoja a very poor community. Some people in Multan whom Pir Shamsh converted were known as Shamshi. In Multan area these Shamshis still exist and follow Ismailism.
Pir Shamsh is also known by the name Shamsudin Tabrezi, Shamsudin Sabzwari, Shamsh Maghribi, Shamsudin Iraqi and also known as Shamsh Kalandar.
Pir Shamsh was living in a time when people used to perform miracles with their spiritual powers and convert them to their faith. Pir Shamsh has created many miracles, some of them I will write about here.
In Multan the king’s only son died. He invited all Fakirs, Sufis and other people with spiritual knowledge to bring his son alive. No one could bring the son back to life. Then Pir Shamsh was invited to do this job. Pir Shamsh looked at the body of the dead son and said “Rise in the name of Allah”, nothing happened. Then he said “Rise by my ORDER” and the son came back to life.
Watching this the religious gurus felt insulted so to keep their status they said that Pir Shamsh tried to be above God and according to the religion he should be skinned alive. Pir Shamsh skinned himself and threw the skin to these religious gurus. Now the gurus got scared. After a while Pir Shamsh was hungry but no one in the town offered him food and boycotted him. There was one butcher who felt sorry and gave him a chunk of meat but no one allowed him to cook the meat. Then Pir Shamsh with his spiritual power ordered the SUN to come lower so he could cook the meat. The SUN came lower and he could cook the meat and eat. Now with the heat of the sun the whole town was suffering and they ran to Pir Shamsh and apologized for their behavior and requested him to solve the problem. Pir Shamsh then ordered the sun to go back to its original location. The town in which it took place is named SURYA KUND which still exists.
Another miracle also took place in Multan. Pir Shamsh went in a mosque to pray. The pesh imam started the prayer. In between the Namaz pir Shamsh got up and sat in a corner of the mosque. When the prayer was over the people were angry and came to him and started complaining to him. Pir Shamsh said that he said the prayer as long as the pesh imam was praying. When he went away I sat down. The crowd said that pesh imam is right here what are you talking? Then Pir Shamsh called the pesh imam and asked him if he was thinking of the cow that had given birth to a newly born baby during namaz. Then he said that you had forgotten to tie the baby and it would drink all the milk from the cow and you will not get the milk that day. The pesh imam agreed. Then Pir Shamsh lead the namaz and as he was saying the namaz the minerates also bowed down in sijda along with the congregation in the mosque.
Hearing about this miracle Bahaudin who was a famous spiritual guru got scarred that he would lose his fame. So he arranged with the people not to allow Pir Shamsh to cross the river so he could not come to town . So people removed their boats and there was no boat available for pir Shamsh to cross the river. So with the spiritual power Pir Shamsh made a boat of paper and started to cross the river. Bahaudin saw that from his window and prayed so the paper boat started to sink. Then pir Shamsh looked at the window from which Bahaudin was watching and prayed and Bahaudin grew 2 long horns immediately. Now there was no way that Bahaudin could go back in his room because the long horns would not allow. His head was stuck in the window.
Next Bahaudin sent his 2 sons to pir Shamsh and to apologize on behalf of their father and requested pir Shamsh to free him from the curse. Pir Shamsh did that and said the markings of the horns will remain on their father’s head and his progeny.
Pir Shamsh has written many garbis, ginans and granths in which he preached and explained Ismailism (Sat panth means the TRUE PATH). Sloko moto is the granth which has 240 verses which is one of the many granths he has written.
Pir Shamsh had 2 sons. Hazrat Nasirudin and Sayad Ahmed Zindapir. After Pir Shamsh Nasirudin was appointed as the pir by the imam of the time. Pir Nasirudin is the 24th Pir of our lineage of Pirs. At present the NOOR of the pir is held by the Imam of the time (Hazar Imam). It is the imam who makes the decision as to when and where to appoint another Pir.
Pir Shamsh died in Multan and he is buried there.
