Pir Satgur Noor
Before you read the life of Pir Satgur Noor read the article on Prophets and Pirs. That will give you the idea of the status of the Pirs and the Imams.
Pir Satgur Noor was the first pir who came to India to propogate the Ismaili tarikah of Islam. He was sent to India by Imam Ismail. The pir was from the family of Imam Jafar Sadik (our 5th Imam). He gained spiritual knowledge from Imam Ismail and came to India.
The Pir’s real name was Sayad Nuruddin Noormohamed. When he came to India the Muslims were looked down upon and a hatred was shown towards them. This was because India was raided by Moghul kings like Baber, Humayun etc. from Afghanistan. Lots of its villages were pillaged, temples destroyed, men killed and so on.
So the pir changed his name to Satgur Noor. This name sounded Hindu and more accepted. He came to India and started spreading Islam. Eventually he ended up in Gujerat. Here he came to a place called Sidhpur Patan and went to a famous Hindu temple. When the pandit saw him looking like a Muslim he stopped him from entering the temple. At that time the pir said to him if your gods would not allow me I will not enter. The padit replied they are stones and cannot speak. At that time the pir with his spiritual power made all the statues dance in the temple. Seeing this miracle everybody around were astonished. Also the king found out about it and came to see the miracle. After he fell on the feet of the Pir and accepted him as a spiritual person.
Next the king arranged a competition between Pir Satgur Noor and another of the Hindu high priest named Janipa. They both showed their spiritual powers and the Pir won. So the king and many of his population accepted Ismailism.
India at that time was made up of small kingdoms. So the pir travelled to the kingdom of Dhara Nagari. The king’s name was Soorchand. He had a daughter named Palande who fell in love with the Pir experiencing his spiritual powers and wanted to marry him. King Soorchand even though was against this met with the Pir who cured an illness the king had, with his spiritual powers. Now the king accepted the Pir as some Great highly spiritual person and agreed to get them married.
The place where the marriage took place is named Navsari. This location where the marriage took place had two lakes. On the day of marriage one lake turned into Milk and other lake turned into Sherbat. Till today these two lakes are known as Dudhia and Sherbatia.
Pir Satgur Noor has written many ginans and some of them are available in printed forms. This had happened about a thousand years ago and many of the ginans are lost. One famous book of Pir Satgur Noor is Satgur Noor na Putla. Means the statues of Sagur Noor. The Pir died in Navsari and is buried there.
Next I will write about the famous Pir who came to India at the time of Imam Kassam Shah. His name is Pir Shamsuddin Mohamed commonly known as Pir Shamsh.
