CHAR JUUG
In our ginans there is a mention of CHAR JUUG. “Char juug ne char khaan suno mara munivaro” in the ginan “Mitha Naam Mohamed ka”. I have written about Char Khaan in another article. In this one I will discuss about Char juug. So what does the word JUUG mean? It is a time period which means a certain length of time.
The following are the Char (Four) juug and their lengths,
1. Sut juug also known as Karta juug (1,728,000 year long)
2. Treta juug (1,296,000 year long)
3. Dwapur juug (864,000 year long)
4. Kal juug (432,000 year long)
The first three juugs have already passed. Now we are living in the fourth juug which is Kal juug. The Kal juug has started about 7 thousand years ago and which is supposed to last for a total of 432,000 years (Four hundred and thirty-two thousand years).
So if you add up the total time period of four juugs it comes to 4,320,000 (Four million three hundred and twenty thousand years). The following ginan mentions this figure and goes this way. “Eji tetalis lakh and upar wis ajar ……..te chello naklanki avtaar. The word naklanki means without stain or pure. This is the avtaar (incarnation) of Hazrat Ali.
In Das Avtaar article I have mentioned that God took incarnations as lower or physical forms. So far nine avtaars have already happened and the final tenth avtaar as Naklanki avtaar he has one more devil to kill. In the ginan the devil is referred to as Danav.
During these four juugs lots of things have happened. Sut juug was a period when TRUTH prevailed. People were extremely religious and honest. Only 2.5 percent of the people sinned. In this period there was a King named Harnakansh. He had a newly born son, whose name was Pehlaj. When he was born the astrologers told the king that he was going to be a big trouble for the king. So the king wanted to kill his son. He tried many ways to kill him but did not succeed. So eventually he tied him on a pillar and set fire around him. At this time the pillar exploded and God came out of it as half lion and half human. This is because the king got a promise from God for the good deeds and prayers of his life time as a reward. The reward goes this way.
The king laid out these conditions so he could live forever. Some of the conditions were that he could not die during the day or in the night. He could not die with any weapon. He could not die in the building or outside the building. No human or animal could kill him, he could not die on the land or in the air and so on …
So God took incarnation as half lion and half human. When the king tried to kill his son tied to the pillar, God appeared from the pillar in the above form. He took the king and put him on his lap on the threshold of his palace at the early hour of the day break which was neither day or night. The king was neither in the air or on the ground. He was neither inside or outside the building. This way the king was killed by the paws of the lion and brought an end to the king’s reign. All above conditions were met by God.
Pehlaj then became Mukhi and in his reign he helped 50 million people to get Salvation. All this happened in Karta juug or Sat juug.
In the next Treta juug things started to deteriorate in a sense of honesty. People started to sin more. In this juug the sins increased and the percentage of sinners became 25% and 75% of people were still religious and honest.
In this juug there was a king whose name was Harishchandra. He was a very honest Hindu religious person. He had a wife whose name was Tara rani and a son called Rohidaas. Tara rani was also very religious and had found Sat panth (the true path). She used to get up in the middle of the night and meet other people with the same belief and do Ibadat or bandage. The group used to cut a goat and distribute the meat as Juro to take home.
The king found out about Tara rani going out at night somewhere. So one night he followed her and found out what was going on. He reached to the palace before the queen came home. He was very mad because he saw the meat was distributed in the gathering and being Hindu they did not eat meat. So when the queen came home from the gathering he got up and demanded to show what she had in the plate she brought home. The queen prayed to God to save her from the situation and showed the plate to the king. All meat turned into flowers etc. and the king was astonished. Then he asked the queen to show him that religion. The queen said that to get that religion he will have to sacrifice his kingdom, his queen, his son and everything that belongs to him. The king gave up everything and accepted the Sat Panth (the true path) and devoted his life in the service of God. There is a ginan in which there is this story. Amar te aayo more shahjijo e muallah.
The whole family suffered the torture of physical life but became very close to God. The king helped 70 million people to get Salvation.
In Dwapur juug was the time of 5 Pandav brothers with sati dropadi. They also were rulers of a kingdom. They were advised to leave the kingdom and spend time in the forest. They lived in the Himalayas. Spent their lives in the cold weather and eat fruits and vegetables from the forest. Eventually he had a following of millions of people and in his time the king helped 90 million people to the path of Salvation. In this juug 75% were sinners and 25% still religious.
In Kal juug Pir Sadardin with his extreme spiritual knowledge studied the Hindu religion. He came to India to spread knowledge of the Islam and the Ismaili tarikah. Pir Sadardin’s life was very simple. He used to write the manuscript of the Quran and sell them in the form of books and make his living. He was well known in the circle of learned people. He also was invited by the king of the time to debate religions with the Hindu padits. Due to his extremely deep knowledge of both Islam and Hinduism he convinced the court that he was a champion. He was then given the title of Sohdev (a person with the knowledge of 100 learned people). He also had other titles like bargur etc. In this period the sinners will increase to 97.5% and only 2.5 % of the population will be religious and this is the fore cast of the Pirs. In the ginan it is referred to as "Panch kose gaam" meaning there will be one MOMAN in approximately every 20 square miles. In certain rural areas of India kos is the measure of distance which is about 2 miles.
Up to his time there were 360 million followers who were eligible to get salvation. Out of them 240 million did not pay the Dasond (which is one of the foundations of Ismailism). Hence only 120 million people got salvation in his time and the rest did not.
So if you add up five, seven, nine and twelve millions, the number comes to 330 million people who got salvation
up to the time of Pir Sadardin. Now for a person who still is wondering what salvation means, it is a state in which the souls of the people who got salvation will not take any physical forms of life. They will stay in the spiritual world forever and close to one who is above all else.
Hindu people refer to this as tetris karod devta (330 million deities). We Ismailis refer to them as tetris karod ruhanis (330 million souls of people who got salvation).
Now you must be wondering why I am mentioning the Hindu religion. In das avtaar I have explained the nine avtaars that took place in the past. The seventh to ninth avtaars were Shri Ram, Shri Krishna, and Budh avtaars which were the part of Hindu religion. The tenth avtaar according to our belief is the Avataar of Hazrat Ali. This way the religions are connected.
An avtaar is the Noor or light of God passing from one body to another and these bodies have been given the power of God to achieve anything to keep the TRUE PATH ALIVE.
I hope this will give you the idea of the Char juug.
