KNOW YOUR DUA AND KNOW ISMAILISM
Bismil-Lahir-Rahmanir-Rahim
To understand Ismailism first you have to understand Islam. Ismailism is one of the 73 branches of Islam. To understand Islam first I will discuss the time before the creation of all we can see around us like mountains, sea, clouds, and different kinds of life form including human beings and also creations that are unseen by us humans.
Before Allah decided to create ANYTHING, HE first of all separated a chunk out of his NOOR (Light) and gave it a separate identity. This part of NOOR was given a FEMALE role. Here the MALE AND FEMALE CONCEPT was created. This Noor of Allah was then given a role of creating the world. The females always give birth as you can see around you in any species of life form. In Islam we believe this female NOOR was the NOOR of Prophet Mohamed (Say Salwaat every time his name appears in any write-up). We also believe that this Noor went in 124,000 bodies (at different times and in different places to guide the whole creation to the path of Siratal Mustaqim (The right path). These were the bodies of the PROPHETS. Out of all the Prophets there are six major Prophets that most people and religions recognize. Prophets Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, Moses, Jesus and Mohamed. Also present with the Prophets were the IMAMS who represented the Male part of the NOOR. (The Imams have remained mostly in the background till Hazrat Ali (A.S.) was declared as the Imam of the time). So the Protocol is from ALLAH TO IMAMS TO PROPHETS. ALL THREE ARE THE SAME NOOR (LIGHT). In our old Dua there is a mention of Imams as Paatra.
In Islam we believe that Prophet Mohamed was the last Prophet sent to us by Allah. During his life time Hazrat Ali was born. Both the Prophet and Harzart Ali were cousins. Their fathers were brothers. Later Hazrat Ali Married the Prophet’s daughter Bibi Fatima. They had 2 sons in the marriage. Hazrat Hasan and Imam Husain.
Before Prophet Mohamed passed away he instructed people to follow the 2 weighty things which will guide them thru the end of time. One was THE HOLY QURAN AND THE OTHER WAS AHLUL BAIT. (The immediate family of the Prophet). This included Hazrat Ali, Bibi Fatima, Hazrat Hasan and Imam Husain and their progeny. In the incident of Ghadire Khum the Prophet also declared to follow Hazrat Ali after him. There is a mention in the Quran about it which we say in the third part of our Dua three times a day. (Ya Ay-Yuhar-Rasulu Bal-Ligh …….. Wal-Lahu Ya’simuka Minan Naas).
As the Prophet Mohamed passed away some of his relatives turned away from the guidance of the Prophet and ran after the Wealth and Power. They immediately gathered the people around them and held the election for the appointment of the Khalif. This was the head of the state. None of these people had any respect for the Prophet and gave him a proper burial. Hazrat Ali, his family and some of his closest relatives and companions quietly buried the Prophet and performed his religious rites. It was Hazrat Ali who was appointed by the Prophet to lead the Umma in both temporal and secular way. This means that follow the GUIDANCE OF THE IMAM who will lead you on THE STRAIGHT PATH. Hence Imams are the ones to follow after the Prophet. All our Imams are appointed by the previous Imams and there is no election ever.
Abu Bucker became the first Khalif of the Muslim people. He took away the RIGHTS of Hazrat Ali to lead the Muslim Umma. Abu Bucker and his companions brought the split in the religion. People who followed the Khalif they became Sunni and the people who followed Hazrat Ali became Shia.
Hazrat Ali became the first manifest Imam of the time. In the second part of our Dua we acknowledge the manifest Imams as it is mentioned in Sura Yaseen (Sura 36-Ayat 12) in the Quran which says “And we have vested (the knowledge and authority of) everything in the MANIFEST IMAM.”
We again confirm our belief in the second part of the Dua “Mowlana Sha Karim Al Husaini AL IMAMUL HADIRUL MAWJUD”. This means Our lord Shah Karim al-Husaini is our present living Imam. Again in fifth part of the Dua we re-iterate “YA HADIR, YA MAWJUD YA SHAH KARIM AL HUSAINI ANTAL IMAMUL HAQQUL MUBIN” which means O present, O living, O Shah Karim al Husaini, Thou art the TRUE MANIFEST IMAM.
Now let us discuss more about our Dua. Every day we recite Sura Al-Hamd which is in the first part of our Dua. Every Muslim recites this Sura in his prayer. In this Sura we praise Allah who is compassionate, merciful, the Lord of the DAY OF JUDGEMENT. We only worship him and ask for his help to guide us to the RIGHT PATH and keep us away from going astray.
Just like other Muslims in the Umma we believe that there is ONLY ONE ALLAH. He is ABSOLUTE, INDEPENDENT. He was not born or gave birth to anyone and there is no one like him. We recite this in “Surat-ul-Ikhlas” in the sixth part of our Dua. This confirms our belief in ONENESS OF ALLAH.
In the fourth part of our Dua we recite “IN-NAL LADHINA YUBA YIUNAKA …. FA SAYUTHIHI AJRAN AZIMA. In this ayaat Allah says to the Prohpet Mohamed “Verily, those who give Thee their allegiance they give it but to Allah (Himself). Allah’s hand is upon their hands. Then he who breaks it, he certainly breaks it against himself, and he who fulfils what he has pledged with Allah, HE (Allah) shall in return reward him in plenty. (Sura Fatah – Sura 48 ayat 10.)”
So Prophet Mohammed gave bayat to people and accepted them in Islam. This essentially means that the person who accepted Islam gave his allegiance to the Prophet and in return the Prophet promised him that HE will protect the person in this world and the next world.
Prophet Mohammed left the ALL IMPORTANT MESSAGE for his followers to follow the QURAN AND HIS AHLUL BAIT (THE IMMEDIATE MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY).
Hazrat Ali was the part of AHLUL BAIT. He became the FIRST IMAM of the Shia Muslims. People who obeyed the wishes of the Prophet Mohammed, took Hazrat Ali’s BAYAT after him. (ONLY THE IMAM OF THE TIME QUALIFIES TO GIVE BAYAT TO HIS MURIDS WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO SURA FATAH AS MENTIONED ABOVE. THE FIRMAN OF THE IMAM GIVES PERMISSION TO MUKHI SAHEBS TO PERFORM BAYAT ON BEHALF OF THE IMAM.)
People who took Hazrat Ali’s BAYAT became Shia Muslims. Later there were several splits within the Shia community (which I will not discuss here) and the community that held on to the ROPE OF IMAMAT are the SHIA IMAMI ISMAILIS TODAY.
One thing I would like to mention here is how the name ISMAILI came about. At the time of our sixth Imam there was a split in the Shia Muslims. The name of the sixth Imam was ISMAIL. People who followed IMAM ISMAIL got the name ISMAILI. We are not the only Ismaili at the present time. There is a Bohra community who are also Ismaili. The difference between them and us is that we follow the PRESENT IMAM. HENCE WE ARE KNOWN AS SHIA IMAMI ISMAILI. They split with us at the time of the EIGHTEENTH IMAM.
I hope this will explain you about our IDENTITY.
There is another matter I would like to discuss here is about other Muslims and people of other faiths like Christians, Hindu etc. Sometimes they say to us that they allow us to enter their place of worship like Mosques, Church etc. Why they are not allowed to come to our JAMAT KHANAS ?
The answer to that is very simple. We Shia Imami Ismailis believe in Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ etc. as our PROPHETS. Other people do not believe in our IMAMS as the progeny of PROPHET MOHAMMED and have not taken the BAYAT of the Imam of the time. So they cannot come to our Jamat Khana during our religious ceremonies.
